“Well done everybody” – Robert Aymar, director-general of the European Organization for Nuclear Research
Well, it looks like CERN’s tests on the new world’s largest particle collider had a successful test. There were some fears that it could create a black hole that would destroy the world, but apparently we’re all safe. Its supposed to be able to find the Higgs Boson particle, the as of yet undiscovered “God particle” that will further our understanding how matter relates with energy, but some physicists like Stephen Hawking don’t think they’ll be successful. Anyway, I find it a bit intriguing being in Physics 231 this year.
Yes, but all they did was flip it on and throw some particles around. They haven’t done any collisions yet, which are supposed to (not) make the black holes. We’re doomed on October 21.
I’m sure you already saw the XKCD on the subject.
