Recently I’ve been making my way through “Godel, Escher, Bach”. It is a fascinating book for anyone interested in math or life’s paradoxes. The book is long but written so anyone may understand complex theories and theorems. The chapters are short and alternate subjects and alternate between the author’s prose and dialog between imaginary characters. The book is hard to describe, but is fandastic and well worth picking up a copy. Some of the first characters are Achilles and tortise, who the philosopher will recognize from Zeno’s paradox.
Let’s see if I can remember without falling back on wikipedia. Zeno’s paradox supposes a race between these two charaters where tortise has a head start. Zeno says that in the time period it takes Achilles to reach tortise, tortise will move forward. This is carried on infinitely, so Achilles will never pass tortise. Weird and there are ways in physics and math to satisfy the paradox, but it’s fun and geeky to think about.
I got to thinking about when I was stuffing things in my suitcase. At some point the suitcase is “full.”. But, I’m always able to squeeze in one more camera lens or shirt or maybe some socks. How is that? Maybe my case is ballistic nylon and has a good zipper, so I haven’t found the breaking point yet. Still, I think some of my readers might appreciate my math musings.
